Public Policy Major

Why Study Public Policy?

Public policy impacts people鈥檚 everyday lives. Those who develop and implement public policy create laws, regulations, budgets, and programs. This interdisciplinary major begins in fall 2024 and incorporates social sciences, humanities, and the sciences to educate students about policymaking. Public policy majors will be prepared for knowledgeable and just participation in policy formation and implementation in their communities.

Students with degrees in public policy pursue a wide array of careers and pathways, including:

  • Civil service at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Private sector careers at nonprofits or institutions that engage with government agencies.
  • Pursuing advanced degrees in public administration, public policy, or law.

Students who complete the public policy major will learn vital skills to help them become changemakers in their communities. These skills include:

  • Learning to identify key policymaking institutions and explain how they use political power to advance the agendas of their constituents.
  • Acquiring the ability to understand, evaluate, and propose public policy at a local, state, national, or international level.
  • Becoming equipped to participate in a policymaking institution and reflect on their experience.

Faculty Spotlight: Jon Peterson

A native of Minnesota, Dr. Jon Peterson graduated from Wheaton College in 1994 with a degree in political science but decided to teach at 草莓影视 because of the opportunities the city offers its students. He encourages them to ask questions, get to know their communities, and get involved.

鈥淚 tell them, wherever you want to make a difference, you鈥檙e going to run into a government,鈥 Peterson said. 鈥淓ven if you want to change something through a community organization, you can鈥檛 do it without dealing with the government, so learn how the system works.鈥
